2023 Diversity in startups report
Power in Diversity is publishing its Israeli startup diversity report for the third consecutive year.
Compiled with the help of Dealigence, this report is based on data collected from 841 VC-backed startups and public companies and analyzes gender diversity, Arab and ultra-Orthodox representation and leadership dynamics in our industry.
Key findings show a general increase in the representation of women in the industry, including in technical roles, which is a positive outcome given the current political atmosphere. However, persistent barriers hinder women’s entry into technical fields, resulting in a decline in their representation at the C-level.
Our study also examined the status of Arabs and ultra-Orthodox in the startup ecosystem. Comparatively to women, the numbers in this section are significantly lower. Data on the representation of Arabs and/or ultra-Orthodox employees was collected from 36 companies that replied to our data request (out of over 100 companies that received a data request).
- Out of 36 companies 20 have Arab employees and 14 have ultra-Orthodox employees.
- 14 companies have no Arabs or ultra-Orthodox employees
- Smaller companies have more diversity of Arabs and ultra-Orthodox workers than the larger companies (not in percentages but in absolute numbers).
This year we also delved into representation of women in global ecosystems. The Israeli tech ecosystem exhibited similarities to global trends in women’s participation, reflecting both progress and persistent challenges. Despite the challenges Israel faced in 2023, followed by the even more tumultuous events of 2024, key trends and obstacles mirror those in other startup ecosystems: underrepresentation in leadership roles, difficulties in securing funding, and sectoral disparities in gender representation.
A list of leading diversified companies in the ecosystem is also included in the report.
A list of the five leading publicly traded diversified companies which we view as leaders in the Israeli industry, both professionally and socially.
